Goals

Kai drove into town mind running, fueled by one statement and question, “You guys were goals! What happened?” They really were. She loved that man like her life and salvation were dependent on it. As a devout Christian, and a child of divorce she would never separate her family, and she would never make her children face the pain and instability of a broken home. The home her and Jeremy created in their twenties slowly began to crumble but from the inside. The facade remained in tack but as if termites ate away at the scaffolds of her mental health and the splinter in her eye was perceived by Jeremy as a beam. Somehow the emotional abuse she’d faced behind the closed door of their bedroom crept down the hall morphing into a monster she could not reason with.

It was by God’s grace that she had birthed two children and for Kai, they were the sun and moon. The days and nights spent alone caring for her family were illuminated by the lives of Damascus and Taliah. Yet they also slowly revealed the other side of Jeremy. And when she knew better, Kai resolved to do better. Even if it meant abandoning the god she worshipped all her life.

One by one

What are 5 everyday things that bring you happiness?

You must count your blessings,

Count them one by one.

Lest you be forgetting

All the good that’s been done,

It’s like a good father,

Not derelict or strange

A provider and protector

Who plays the long game.

So one is for my daughter,

The apple of my eye.

Two is for my son,

I love to see him shine.

Three is for my doodle

The cutest thing I’ve ever seen.

Four is for my profession

I actually live my dream

Five is for my tribe,

Who walk by my side.

Stargazing

Finally found the time to look up.

Back against the wall had me stuck.

Fear and pride had me blind

To escape by way of self love.

The anger in my heart melted by fires of truth

Knowing that leaving it all behind

Walking by faith not sight.

Made true friends along the way

A specter to old allies and confidants turned foes

Now I can see the buds on trees

No longer saplings from seeds

Planted years ago

In the here and now I’m looking up

Knowing that everything I see

Is all now so heavenly.

love island

Just realized that I’m not crazy

That everything I want

I totally deserve

Conflict happens when I’m given shit

And I turn around like, “I don’t want this.”

They keep giving me their worst

Knowing I am and give my very best

The swimming pool has piss

Find someone else to wade in this

I can’t wait for this

Or that shit.

I resist

Resistance.

Be like water my friend

On this love island.

Summer

What is your favorite season of year? Why?

Now that it’s summer

I’m looking for you

Thought I found you on social media

Way back when

Thought I found you in church

Singing sweet and low the souls gospel hymn

Thought I found you in hip hop

A dope rhyme, boom bap, Ellington on keys.

Thought I find you in a club, gym or speakeasy

A meet cute so serendipitous it’d hurt your tooth

And now that it’s summer

Hoping you find me.
