Have you ever been camping?

After 14 years I decided to camp,

Never really been outside or carried a lamp.

I was excited to roam, to finally be free,

A breath of fresh air, I’d been holding it for 3.

Almost that if catch my death

the way the cold ate up inside of me.

So off I went with all my trappings,

So much so the bag lady said I’m packing.

Thought nature would be glad to see me,

Let’s not forget the allergies,

I vetted and sneezed

And after on night I could finally see,

That that would be my last time camping.

You must count your blessings,

Count them one by one.

Lest you be forgetting

All the good that’s been done,

It’s like a good father,

Not derelict or strange

A provider and protector

Who plays the long game.

So one is for my daughter,

The apple of my eye.

Two is for my son,

I love to see him shine.

Three is for my doodle

The cutest thing I’ve ever seen.

Four is for my profession

I actually live my dream

Five is for my tribe,

Who walk by my side.

Somehow you got it and deception wrought it.

There were some beautiful years and tender

moments curated from the intentional setting

of a loving family and community

They became your utmost calling.

So now, instead of remembering

the cloudy days, you sit in gradtitude for

the warmth of the rays, they begin to pour

You know why the caged bird sings

Sweet melodies of hard fought liberation.

How often do you say “no” to things that would interfere with your goals?

No means a thousand times yes.

I’ll no longer partake in this Cold War

Division, inequity and neo imperialism.

Instead of flipping the table

I pushed my chair back.

Stood on my own two

Self determination and sovereignty.

Wiped the breadcrumbs left for me

off my lap1

Took a step back and examined the scraps

Mandated reparations for my progeny

The superpowers of yesterday are derelict

Decided to walk away and towards my destiny

Built a community that has watched my seeds

Grow, thrive and flourish

My love knows no distance

And as God is my witness

Thing One and Thing Two

Who are your favorite people to be around?

My babies been with me since I was 23. It’s hard to image not having them around. When they are gone, there is a bittersweet feeling of ease and longing. There hasn’t been a a day or hour that I have not thought of them. Mind running, eyes scanning and ears listening to hopes and dreams. And also they are funny, intelligent, entertaining, authentic and fearless people. I love them a lot.
