This book has got to be one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. Although this series is nothing like TOG, I have connected with Kincaid’s writing, characters, and plot. In my mind, Maas is the Queen of fae and Kincade is the Queen of outer space. The plot is excellent, the main character is utterly unique, and the worldbuilding is perfect. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. If you haven’t delved too deeply in sci-fi, give this book a try, its well worth your time and the audiobook is superb.

Busting Through Bricks Like the Kool Aid Man

Today marks the last month of student teaching and let me just say that graduate school are not for mother’s with a husband and children. Matter of fact, school is for kids, not real adults.

Anyways, check out that title! I seriously considered walking out the class today. Pretty sure my kids gave me a legit headache and actually made my head spin so quick that I had to ask my CT for some on site pain reliever.

My Professor posted a discussion question entitled, Your journey & a jump out the window story. He describes a teacher actually jumping out of a second story window, dangling on the ledge, running to his car, burning rubber never to be seen or heard of again. I don’t blame the guy.

You just might see me busting through my oblong windowless classroom like the Kool-Aid man.

inside of me is a bellow.

a shriek that pierces the heavens,

yet echos against the bars of this prison im in.

of tantrums and a verbose vomit spewing of anger and hate.

Shattering the heart – yet building walls.

Constructed by cold avoidance and confusion,

yet picked away by a romantic gesture or two.

A fickle memory born of words better left unsaid.

Heavy hands upon a tender child desiring mother’s love.

Perhaps ones formative years indeed defines today.

Fragility’s rage

is a tortoise in its shell

When danger comes, pull in, don’t run like hell.

Flashbacks and words fall upon that shanty,

Accusations now muffles within the cramped cavity.

But when no one is looking fragility’s rage

is like a magicians token quote,

“no you see me, now you don’t.”

Children of Blood and Bone (Legacy of Orïsha, #1) Book Review

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

“The gods chose you, they don’t make mistakes.”

First of all, I am grateful for this book. Why you ask? As a bookish POC who loves fantasy and science fiction, this is my first time reading a novel in this genre with all African characters. Issues of colorism and police brutality, as well as themes of oppression and justice, permeate this novel. Adeyemi does a great job at handling these sensitive topics and the tone is almost reminiscent of apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa.

Now for the other stuff. The magic system is dope and rich, with varying powers/giftings endowed to a chosen few by a god/goddess. This book started off realllly good until about a third of the way and then it slowed down. In that way this book reminds me of The Poppy War, BUT, it picks back up two-thirds of the way and were back in business. I wonder if that is because it was supposed to be a stand alone. But its done so well and now its gonna be a series. IDK. Not sure where the series will go from here but the skies the limit.

I’m very excited for the next installment and I’m praying my girl delivers.
