wounded healer

so many nicks, cuts, bumps and bruises

not a moment to breathe without bumping into it.

that broken, sad child is me.

only wanting love and peace.

but instead they pick me a part.

stab me in the back to eat out my heart.

plucking each hair of imperfection

lest i walk freely in some imagined deception

your critical eye

where were your fingers when i needed a touch of grace?

where were your hands to wipe my tear streamed face?

your sharp tongue

where were your lips when i needed a kind word?

where was your kiss to soothe where it hurts?

provision is not an excuse for your derision.

protection should not be your reasons for oppression.

but how can the wounded heal,

without tending to themselves?

how can the wounded hear

over their own silent cries for help?

Chosen Ones (The Chosen Ones, #1) Book Review

Chosen Ones (The Chosen Ones, #1)Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was so excited to read Veronica Roth again. I tried to get into the Carve the Mark series but I just couldn’t get past the first half of the first book. I really enjoyed this book. The main character is flawed and what inspired me the most is that the heroine decided to stop pretending to be someone she was not. She totally owned her failures and did not let her former boyfriend guilt her for breaking up with him. That was so dope. I don’t think I have ever read a common character trope to play out the way it did in this book.  The magic system and world building is on point and of course the setting is in Chicago.  Roth really knows the layout of Chicago and I could envision almost every scene set in the city.  This book falls in between YA and New Adult.

Furyborn (Empirium #1) REVIEW

Furyborn (Empirium, #1)Furyborn by Claire Legrand

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book gives me Falling Kingdoms (by Morgan Rhodes) vibes. I enjoyed Legrand’s writing style however, it wasn’t until the end of the book that I realized that the two main characters were from two different time periods! LOL not exactly sure how I missed that.  I think it’s because there was a bit too much jumping around and too many characters to remember. So now that I know what’s going on, perhaps it will make reading the second book easier.

School in the Snow

“School in the Snow”

It’s been a while since I’ve been a working professional. Now that I’m slowing getting back in the groove, I’m now trying to navigate business casual attire during these cold winter months. Since I can’t bring myself to dress casually like most teachers, here are some things I have =

1) Shoes in your bag: Wear your boots to and from the classroom, but have your dress shoes in your bag or at your desk.

2) Wear a dress or skirt with tights if you want to rock your fave dress boots.

3) Layer up: It’s tempting to rock a hoodie on cold days. RESIST and layer up with a sleeveless shirt, cardigan or sweater, scarf and your coat. Gloves and hats are also a must-have.

christmas scram to cram

Last week I was very discouraged. I decided to just go for it. If I fall or fail, I will get back up and try again until I reach my goal. With that said, I have just registered to take the NES History Exam. I have four weeks to study, and I am pretty sure I’m going to fail.

I have not taken a history course in over 10 YEARS!

I keep asking myself why I chose to do this. I bought a $50 study guide so we will see. I am afraid of the written portion, what if the topic is something I have very little knowledge of? Let the crunch time begin. Of course, I would be trying to study during the holidays right? Christmas should totally be stress-free.
